This chalipanga vine was passed on us by Armando Andy, the grandfather shaman and founder of a Kichwa community. He left us in June 2020. We are growing this strong variety of Chali panga in the permaculture garden at our property hidden in the primary forest. The local black soil makes the plant strong and we combine it with B. caapi (Ayahuasca) vine to create our ceremonial drink Ayahuasca. The name Chali panga comes from our Kichwa (runa shimi) language and it means The leaves of Chali. Therefore the correct name of this plant is simply "Chali". The people who live downstream the river Napo sometimes called it Chaliponga, Chagropanga (leaves from the garden - obviously a name for masking its true purpose) or Huambisa (around Pucallpa). When we combine it with the vine, it makes the brew much stronger and more visual. We dry it in a shade under tin roofs to assure its strength.
