Ilex guayusa—also known as wayusa—is an Amazonian tree whose leaves have been prepared as a naturally caffeinated infusion for centuries. It originates in the western Amazon, especially the region that now forms part of Ecuador and Peru, where the warm, humid forest provides the conditions in which the plant thrives.

How to Prepare Guayusa Tea

Use approximately 5–10 g of dried leaves for 500 ml of water. Pour freshly boiled water over the leaves and steep for 7–10 minutes. For a stronger, more traditional brew, simmer gently for 10–15 minutes, then strain. Enjoy it hot or chilled, on its own or with lemon and a little honey.

You can adjust the quantity of leaves and brewing time to suit your preferred strength. Because guayusa naturally contains caffeine, begin with a lighter infusion if you are sensitive to stimulants.
